The Mandala for World Peace

We are at a critical time in human history. Ancient prophesies predict that our modern era will be fraught with challenges and the inhabitants of the earth will face many dangers. Increased warfare, environmental disasters, economic breakdown, epidemic diseases, famine, and political turmoil are just some of the problems our world is now facing.

Wherever you look, there is conflict, violence, turmoil and suffering. How can we make a difference? How can we do something that will pacify this negativity and help to restore peace?

In the Buddhist tradition, it is believed that there are special types of monuments that possess powerful energetic abilities to remove negativity and protect from disaster. One example is the construction of a full-scale, three-dimensional mandala. These types of monuments have the ability to bestow great blessings throughout the earth – permeating the five elements with their power.

Padmasambhava predicted that Vajrakilaya would be of particular importance in restoring peace and balance on the earth at this critical time. Vakrakilya (P’hurba) is the powerful embodiment of all the Buddha’s activities and is the remover of obstacles.

In keeping with the prophesies, and in response to the growing need to take action, we have initiated the Phurba Peace Mandala Project and the construction of a full-scale Vajrakilaya mandala, according to the Dudjom Tersar lineage.

The Perfect Location

According to divination and through the visions of Lama Dawa Rinpoche, it was determined that the most auspicious and effective location for such a mandala is on the banks of the upper Mississippi River – land that was once sacred to the Native Americans and geographically suited for the maximum energetic effect.

Thanks to the generous efforts of our dedicated Sangha, and through the great blessings of our Gurus, in the summer of 2007 Saraswati Bhawan purchased the perfect piece of property in Northeast Iowa, on the bluffs overlooking the spectacular Upper Mississippi River Valley Wildlife Preserve. Be a Part of This Historic Project

We will be making a full-scale replica of the only known Vajrakilaya mandala in existence today, which is in Bhutan. In 2003, Dawa Chhodak Rinpoche began commissioning expert wood carvers from Bhutan to carve over 130 p’hurbas for the mandala, according to the tradition outlined in the terma treasures of Dudjom Lingpa. This work continues as we work with various Lamas and artisans in Nepal and Bhutan to create the various sections of the mandala and ship them to the US.

We are now initiating a fund-raising effort to begin construction of the temple that will house the mandala. We need to begin the process of land development which includes well drilling, road grading, and architectural drawings of the temple. In the spring of 2008 we will begin laying the foundation for the temple. Our plan is to build as eco-friendly and energy-sustaining as possible, incorporating the use of solar and wind and non-toxic building materials.

For this phase of the project, our goal is to raise $400,000 by the end of 2008. For this we need your help! Now is the chance for you to help make a real difference in the world and help support a project that will bring benefit far into the future.
